Recent Updates and Interesting Sightings

On this dewy morning, interns Tom and Charley stumbled upon
several female Common Snapping Turtles who had climbed the
steep, rocky bluff up from the Marsh, and were laying their
small, ping-pong shaped eggs in carefully excavated nests
in the soft soil near the hiking trail. The interns were fortunate
to share this experience with several CMACS visitors, and
we hope that many more visitors will—carefully!—wander our
way in the next few weeks to witness this amazing natural
phenomenon. With any luck, come September, we hope to witness
the tiny hatchlings’ first downhill journey toward water,
too!

This afternoon, we enjoyed the Quadricentennial celebration
of Henry Hudson's discovery of the river now bearing his name.
From Constitution Island, next to the Marsh, we observed the
sailing of beautiful tall ships--accompanied by numerous other
vessels--up the Hudson. Around 5:20pm, the replica Half Moon
sailed past the United States Military Academy at West Point,
where soldiers fired a 15-gun salute. The Half Moon fired
a return salute. It was a terrific event!
